MDF (medium-density-fiberboard) is a manufactured product composed of wood fibers mixed with resins and wax, and pressed into flat panels under pressure and high temperatures. MDF is a dense product that is heavier than plywood or dimensional lumber. It has a smooth surface and it does warp. Routered cut edges may have a “fur” edge. To finish, prime, lightly sand and prime it again.
At Sign Factory, our MDF letters and numbers are cut with either a laser or CNC (Computer Numerical Control). We stock 1/8″, 1/4″, 1/2″ and 3/4″ MDF. 1/8″ thick MDF letters and numbers are cut with a laser. Letters that are 1/4″ thick and smaller in height are also cut with the laser. All the other thicknesses of letters and numbers are cut with a CNC.
